 For Immediate Release:

A 26-year-old man died Saturday after he became unresponsive in a holding cell at the Gwinnett County Jail.

Quincy William Franklin was brought in to the Gwinnett Jail shortly after midnight Saturday by Lawrenceville Police on a probation violation. He had been picked up by police in DeKalb County Friday night.

Mr. Franklin was placed in a holding cell with two other inmates in admissions. At 12:37 p.m., Mr. Franklin was still snoring loudly in a holding cell with two other inmates. At 12:52 p.m., deputies came to remove one of those inmates to be processed and Mr. Franklin could not be awakened and was not responsive. Medical personnel in the jail responded. Mr. Franklin was given CPR and an ambulance transported him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed Monday, but the results of that autopsy are pending toxicology results. The Gwinnett Sheriff’s Department is conducting internal and criminal investigations into the death, which is standard procedure in all deaths that occur while someone is in custody.
