The Gwinnett Sheriff’s Department opened two investigations into allegations of dogfighting following the announcement that Sheriff Butch Conway was offering $10,000 from his personal finances for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in these horrible acts.
A recent interview on Channel 2 regarding the Michael Vick case led Sheriff Butch Conway to offer the personal reward. The interview in question involved a woman who told the TV station that dog fights were occurring all across Georgia. The sheriff - who along with his wife rescues animals from Animal Shelters before they are put down - was appalled and decided to offer the reward from his personal resources to anyone with information regarding fights in Gwinnett County.
“Fighting dogs is horrendous and abhorrent and anyone involved in it should be punished to the fullest extent that the law allows. In my opinion, the penalties should be stiffer for those involved in these acts and no one should ever turn their head or look the other way when they know someone who is involved. If this reward is incentive for people to start reporting it, then I will have accomplished what I intended. It is a small price to pay to bring these people to justice,” said Sheriff Conway.
While the sheriff is not weighing in on the specific allegations against Michael Vick, he is weighing in on his opinion against dog fights.
“People who fight and kill animals cannot be described as anything but depraved and I will do anything in my power to make sure that this is not something that happens in Gwinnett County,” Sheriff Conway said.
