In March of 1997, the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team was created.  The members of this team are highly trained in special weapons and tactics, explosive entries, executive protection and woodland operations.  This team is utilized in the apprehension of dangerous fugitives, barricaded suspects, executive protection and facility defense.

The team has an authorized strength of 55 deputies, which consists of Tactical, Negotiations, Tactical Support, Technical Support and Tactical Medicine. Team members are assigned to other duties full time and are activated as needed.

The S.W.A.T. team handled 28 calls in 2006. In addition to their regular activities, the team has been utilized for tactical response in Glynn County during the G-8 Summit in 2004. In 2005 after hurricane Katrina, the team assisted in restoration of order in Jefferson Parrish, Louisiana. The team also has assisted in facility defense after tornado activity in southern Georgia.

The team has several pieces of equipment that aids them in safely resolving incidents. The latest addition is a tracked armored vehicle. In addition to ballistic protection, the armored vehicle can deliver operators and T.E.M.S. to the site and has night vision capabilities as well as traditional lighting and public address equipment
