Major Ray Pelis began his law enforcement career in 1986 with the City of Atlanta Police Department. He worked as a patrolman, before being chosen to target street level drug investigations.
In 1993, he was hired by the Gwinnett Sheriff’s Department and worked briefly in the detention division. Major Pelis was transferred to the field operation division, where he remained for the next 17 years. Over that span he was responsible for overseeing various groups, including the Fugitive, Sex Offender, and Family Violence units, along with managing various task force groups.
In 2011 Major Pelis was transferred to jail operations and assigned as an assistant watch commander, then assigned as watch commander for dayshift jail operations. Currently Major Pelis commands the Jail Administration and Support Divisions.
Major Pelis has earned over 2000 hours of POST credit, which include over 500 hours of management related classes. He is a recent graduate of the Professional Management Program through Columbus State University. In addition, Major Pelis has earned numerous certifications including a Supervisory POST certification, and SWAT certification. He has received awards for Honorable and Distinguished service, along with being a past recipient of Fugitive Unit of the Year by the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce.
