For Immediate Release:
A Gwinnett County Jail inmate attacked a female deputy today in a housing unit and will be charged with felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
Ernesteen Crawford, 51, of Atlanta was lined up with a group of other female inmates in the unit awaiting pill call when she began a loud verbal outburst. When the deputy walked down to talk to her, Ms. Crawford without warning struck the deputy in the face with a closed fist.
The deputy and inmate fought briefly until help arrived. Deputies had to use a Taser to subdue Ms. Crawford and she had to be placed in a restraint chair due to her violent behavior.
Ms. Crawford is being charged with felony obstruction and is now being housed in a maximum security unit for female inmates. The deputy was not seriously injured.
Ms. Crawford is currently being housed at the Gwinnett County Jail on felony probation violation charges and has been here since January.
