Automated External Defibrillators

For immediate release:

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office began issuing automated external defibrillators (AED) today. By the end of next week, all GCSO patrol vehicles will be equipped with this life saving device.

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm. If needed, it can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest, which occurs when the heart’s electrical system malfunctions. The American Heart Association estimates that 568,400 Americans suffered cardiac arrest last year.

Deputy Younker is an active member of the Gwinnett County Beat the Heat team, which is a team of local law enforcement officers who volunteer their time to educate our communities about the dangers of illegal street racing, distracted driving and DUI.

Warrant Sweep

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office has concluded a two day warrant sweep that resulted in the arrest of 73 wanted persons and the service of 106 arrest warrants.

On September 10th and 11th, 154 law enforcement officers from the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office, Gwinnett Felony Probation and Gwinnett Parole joined forces to serve warrants in Gwinnett County.

The success of this warrant sweep is attributed to the hard work of everyone involved.  “Warrant service requires a lot of preparation and a lot of knocking and talking.  This operation was particularly successful and we appreciate the efforts of our deputies and the Gwinnett Felony Probation and Gwinnett Parole officers,” stated GCSO Field Operations Division Commander Major Kirk Williamson.

Jenkins Arrest

For immediate release:

Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office SWAT negotiators convinced a barricaded murder suspect to peacefully surrender tonight after a two hour standoff at a home in  Lawrenceville.

Suspect Devon Jenkins, wanted by Duluth Police for the August 6 murder of Adam Schrier and the shooting of a woman and young child, initially refused to leave the home at 311Bedford Bay Lane, barricading himself in the upstairs area of the home with 4 young children and an adult female inside.  Sheriff’s SWAT team members safely secured the adult female and two of the children and established contact with Jenkins via cell phone.

Murder Arrest - Stidwell

For immediate release:

Deputies assigned to the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit successfully apprehended a fugitive wanted for an August 14th murder by authorities in Cook County, Illinois on Sunday, 08/30/14.

Deputies were quick to follow up on a lead that 19 year old Devon Stidwell was at the Extended Stay of America at 3390 Venture Parkway in Duluth.  As they arrived at the location, deputies observed Stidwell and an acquaintance leaving the parking lot by vehicle.

Responding Gwinnett County Police officers, already in the area at the request of deputies, conducted a felony stop of the vehicle and Stidwell was arrested.

Fugitive Arrest

August 21,  2014

For Immediate Release:

A joint effort between the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office, US Marshal Fugitive Task Force, the Gwinnett Metro Drug Task Force and Georgia State Patrol led to the apprehension of a fugitive hiding out at the Hampton Inn on Riverside Parkway in Lawrenceville.

As law enforcement officers approached the location, 41 year old James Staples of Tucker, Georgia, entered a vehicle and fled.  A vehicle chase ensued, ending on Oakland Road near Plantation Court in Lawrenceville after sheriff’s deputies safely performed the Precision Immobilization Technique (P.

Phone Scam Alert

August 11, 2014

For immediate release:

Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office investigators met with the most recent victims of phone scammers today.  The four victims, unrelated to one another, each contacted our office on Sunday to make a report and agreed to meet with Sheriff’s investigators this morning.

Each of the victims, all women, advised that she received a phone call from someone identifying himself as “Lt. Pierson” from the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division.  Each victim was informed that she had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear for a jury summons and that to avoid arrest, she can pay the associated fine using a pre-paid debit card.

Velasquez Arrest

July 16, 2014

For immediate release:

A joint effort by the US Marshals SE Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office has resulted in the apprehension of 23 year old fugitive Alejandro Velasquez. Velasquez has been on the run since November 2013, wanted on outstanding warrants for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Battery by Disfiguring, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Participation in Criminal Gang Activity.

The task force developed information that Velasquez was inside a home at 2652 Herndon Road in Lawrenceville today and responded to the location to attempt warrant service.

Warrant Sweep

June 13, 2014

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with Gwinnett Felony Probation and numerous city police agencies, conducted a two day warrant sweep that resulted in the arrest of 59 wanted persons and the service of 77 warrants.

On June 11th and 12th, approximately 104 law enforcement officers from Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office, Gwinnett Felony Probation and Duluth, Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross, Snellville and Suwanee Police Departments joined forces to serve warrants in Gwinnett County.

This warrant sweep was truly a joint venture.

Fugitive Arrest

May 22, 2014

The diligent efforts of deputies assigned to the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit led to the arrest of Bobby Alexander Hunter yesterday.  Hunter was wanted by Duluth Police for Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Burglary, False Imprisonment and Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Crime.

Hunter was also wanted for additional warrants obtained by Georgia State Patrol after fleeing from them in January 2014.

Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Fugitive deputies developed leads that led them to a Krystal's restaurant on Hwy 78 in Stone Mountain, where Hunter was taken into custody without incident.

Phone Scam Alert

In response to the growing number of phone scam reports, Sheriff Butch Conway has initiated the formation of a multi-jurisdictional task force to combat the problem.  Last week, leaders from multiple law enforcement jurisdictions met at the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office to pool resources and identify measures to counteract this organized criminal enterprise.

The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, along with many other law enforcement agencies, has received numerous reports from citizens advising that they were the targets of a telephone scam.  The caller identifies himself as a member of our Warrants Division and advises the victim that he/she did not respond to a jury summons and that to avoid arrest, he/she can pay the associated fines using a pre-paid debit card, usually a Green Dot card.

GMTF Brown Arrest

The Gwinnett Metro Task Force has shut down three marijuana grow houses in the county since last Thursday.

On Thursday, May 15, GMTF investigators followed up on information they received indicating that there may be drugs in a home at 2386 Hidden Lane Snellville. While at the residence, investigators encountered Michael Gerrard Brown, who leased the home. Investigators at the scene noted a strong odor of marijuana and obtained a search warrant. A search of the residence resulted in the seizure of 414 marijuana plants and the arrest of Michael Gerrard Brown.

Additional information was gained at the location which led investigators to Michael Brown's primary residence at 3016 Overlook Hill Pass in Dacula.

Ellison Arrest

Deputies assigned to the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Investigative Services Division have arrested the President and CEO of a non-profit organization after their investigation revealed that he propositioned a female probationer to receive sexual favors in exchange for false documentation of her required community service hours.

A supervisor at Southeast Corrections notified the Sheriff's Office of a complaint by one of their female probationers that Jails to Nails President and CEO Darrell Ellison offered to exchange sexual favors for documentation of her required community service hours.

Bankston Arrest - Elder Abuse

For immediate release:

Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office deputies have arrested Jason Andre Bankston, wanted for the Neglect of a Disabled Adult/Elder Person.
On 07/14/13, Snellville Police officers responded to a call of a person down at 2131 Buckley Trail in Snellville and found 44 year old John Hammond Steele deceased.
A subsequent investigation by Snellville Police resulted in a warrant being obtained for Steele’s caregiver, Jason Andre Bankston, for Neglect of a Disabled Adult/Elder Person.
Gwinnett County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Bankston yesterday and he was transported to the Gwinnett County Jail without incident.

Duncan Arrest - Animal Cruelty

For immediate release:

Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office deputies have arrested Brandon Kaile Duncan on an outstanding warrant for Cruelty to Animals.
Duncan’s arrest stems from an incident on 03-21-14 in which Snellville Police officers were dispatched to an animal welfare call on Parkside Court in Snellville and discovered an emaciated dog with electrical tape tightly wound around its mouth. The dog’s mouth was extremely swollen and bleeding.
Gwinnett County Animal Control took custody of the injured dog and warrants were obtained by Snellville Police for the arrest of Antonio Furlow, the dog’s owner and his roommate, Brandon Kaile Duncan.

Flowers Arrest

For immediate release:

The diligent efforts of deputies assigned to the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit have led to the arrest of an accused murderer.
Nicambreon Mortray Flowers was arrested for the April 19 murder of Joel Tengue at 1435 Boggs Road in Norcross. He is charged with Murder and Armed Robbery.
Fugitive deputies developed leads that indicated that Flowers was in Hattiesberg, Mississippi. Those leads were forwarded to local authorities, who arrested Flowers yesterday in Hattiesburg. He is charged with Murder and Armed Robbery.
Flowers is being held at the Forrest County Jail awaiting extradition to Gwinnett County.

Murder for Hire Plot Uncovered

For Immediate Release:

Deputies assigned to the Investigative Services Division conducted an investigation that led to the unraveling of an inmate's murder for hire plot.

Jeffrey Van Ngo was served with additional arrest warrants today at the Gwinnett County Jail after he attempted to hire an undercover deputy to murder Cuong Nguyen.

Ngo has been held at the Gwinnett County Jail since March 19 on charges (VCGSA - Possession of Controlled Substance and VCGSA - Intent to Distribute Controlled Substance). He has been additionally charged with Conspiracy to Commit a Felony Crime and Criminal Attempt to Commit a Felony Crime.

Suspect in Shooting Arrested

Deputies assigned to the Investigative Services Division (ISD) at the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office have apprehended suspect Josue Ordonez-Ruiz, wanted for shooting a man who was holding Ordonez-Ruiz’s own child during a 2010 domestic violence incident.

On October 30, 2010, Gwinnett County Police were dispatched to a “person shot” call at 5735 Everglades Trail in Norcross, where Ordonez-Ruiz’s ex-wife, Brandy Marez, claimed that her ex-husband followed her and friends home from a bar and began firing a revolver before fleeing in his vehicle.

Operation Shamrock

On March 18th and 19th, over 70 different law enforcement officers, agents, deputies and investigators from six different local, state and federal agencies participated in Operation Shamrock in Gwinnett County. The two day operation focused on assuring the compliance of over 70 registered sex offenders who were on active state probation or parole. Inmate Conspiracy

Deputies at the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office uncovered a conspiracy between three inmates to prevent their respective victims from testifying against them at trial.




An alert deputy became suspicious when two seemingly healthy inmates arrived at the jail’s medical unit appearing to be feigning medical emergencies. The deputy investigated further and discovered that the two inmates, Alfredo Sosa (18 yrs old) and Miguel Luis Camacho-Gonzales (22 yrs old), were co-defendants in an armed robbery.

Suspects Arrested for Battery

A Lawrenceville homeowner was fortunate to have Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office deputies nearby when she was attacked by the tenants that had just been evicted from her property.


At approximately 6:00 pm on Monday, March 3, Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office deputies assigned to the Civil Unit completed a Writ of Possession (eviction) at 802 Deidre Marie Court in Lawrenceville.  As the deputies were leaving the neighborhood, they observed that the eviction crew was not following behind them, as is customary.

Fourth suspect in jewelry robberies arrested

Gwinnett Sheriff’s deputies along with the U. S. Marshal’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested a man Thursday wanted by Gwinnett Police in connection with a violent jewelry store robbery that occurred in March.

 Four males armed with handguns and mallets entered Tara Fine Jewelry on March 22. They robbed the store and struck an elderly male customer in the head during the ordeal.

 Gwinnett police made several arrests in the case, but Simone Simon, wanted in connection with the armed robbery had remained elusive.

Gwinnett Sheriff enters partnership with United Way

Man arrested for DUI at Courthouse Annex

 For Immediate Release:

 A Gwinnett Sheriff’s deputy at the Gwinnett Juvenile/Recorder’s courthouse arrested a man for DUI in the parking lot after the man’s car stalled and he registered a .352 on an intoxilyzer test.

 The deputy noticed the vehicle parked in a crooked position for more than 20 minutes and a man inside the vehicle attempting to leave. The deputy approached the driver and learned the car was stalled.

 The driver, Alexandru Tehnilenco, 29, had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and a 32 ounce container of beer on the driver’s seat.

Operation Second Chance

A new program that allows inmates to train dogs in order to save their lives and find them permanent homes began February 16, 2010 at the Gwinnett County Jail.

Sheriff Conway's Rebuttal to ACLU on Racial Profiling

FALSE INFORMATION RELEASED IN ACLU GEORGIA REPORT

The ACLU recently released a report that Racial Profiling was not only occurring in Gwinnett County, but was prevalent as a result of the 287(g) program. The report is full of false information, false allegations and untruths. While the ACLU indicts this agency and other Gwinnett law enforcement agencies repeatedly as agencies who indulge in racial profiling, they also acknowledge twice in the same report that they don’t have enough information to actually know if racial profiling is occurring. The following is our rebuttal to that report issue by issue:

287(g)

The 287(g) program, a program that allows deputies to identify and place detainers on illegal criminal aliens for U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), officially began November 16, 2009.

The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department made official application for the 287(g) program on March 3, 2008 and our application was approved by the Department of Homeland Security and ICE on July 10, 2009. The Memorandum of Agreement was signed in October and 18 deputies left in mid October for four weeks of training.

The deputies assigned to the program identify illegal criminal aliens under the supervision of  an ICE agent and place detainers on them for ICE.
