Deputies assigned to the Investigative Services Division (ISD) at the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office have apprehended suspect Josue Ordonez-Ruiz, wanted for shooting a man who was holding Ordonez-Ruiz’s own child during a 2010 domestic violence incident.

On October 30, 2010, Gwinnett County Police were dispatched to a “person shot” call at 5735 Everglades Trail in Norcross, where Ordonez-Ruiz’s ex-wife, Brandy Marez, claimed that her ex-husband followed her and friends home from a bar and began firing a revolver before fleeing in his vehicle. Jose Lemus, who was holding the divorced couple’s 7 year old child, was grazed in the leg by a bullet. He was treated at the scene by responding fire rescue personnel. Inmate Conspiracy

For immediate release:

Deputies at the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office uncovered a conspiracy between three inmates to prevent their respective victims from testifying against them at trial.

An alert deputy became suspicious when two seemingly healthy inmates arrived at the jail’s medical unit appearing to be feigning medical emergencies. The deputy investigated further and discovered that the two inmates, Alfredo Sosa (18 yrs old) and Miguel Luis Camacho-Gonzales (22 yrs old), were co-defendants in an armed robbery. A cell search of Sosa’s cell yielded a handwritten note entitled, “Plan To Free Us”, written by a third inmate, Jerome Derrell Welch (22 yrs old).

The information was provided to deputies assigned to the Investigative Services Division, who quickly identified that all three inmates shared a common victim, Matthew Barrett.

Gwinnett Sheriff enters partnership with United Way

 Media Release – December 13, 2011

 For Immediate Release:

In an effort to reduce the recidivism rate, the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the United Way of Metro Atlanta and the Regional Commission on Homelessness to provide homeless inmates with shelter, drug treatment, job skills training and crime prevention classes upon their release from jail.

“This program is something I have felt was needed in Gwinnett County for a long time. Studies show that one in seven people who are incarcerated are homeless. Further studies show that those inmates who have stable housing when they are released are less likely to return to jail or prison,” said Sheriff Butch Conway.

Sheriff Conway's Rebuttal to ACLU on Racial Profiling

FALSE INFORMATION RELEASED IN ACLU GEORGIA REPORT

The ACLU recently released a report that Racial Profiling was not only occurring in Gwinnett County, but was prevalent as a result of the 287(g) program. The report is full of false information, false allegations and untruths. While the ACLU indicts this agency and other Gwinnett law enforcement agencies repeatedly as agencies who indulge in racial profiling, they also acknowledge twice in the same report that they don’t have enough information to actually know if racial profiling is occurring. The following is our rebuttal to that report issue by issue:

The report begins on page 5.

Page 5:

The ACLU cites the Case of “Juan.” They acknowledge pseudonyms are used and not actual names. They state Juan was pulled over by Gwinnett Sheriff’s deputies.

287(g)

The 287(g) program, a program that allows deputies to identify and place detainers on illegal criminal aliens for U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), officially began November 16, 2009.

The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department made official application for the 287(g) program on March 3, 2008 and our application was approved by the Department of Homeland Security and ICE on July 10, 2009. The Memorandum of Agreement was signed in October and 18 deputies left in mid October for four weeks of training.

The deputies assigned to the program identify illegal criminal aliens under the supervision of  an ICE agent and place detainers on them for ICE. Those inmates are then turned over to ICE for deportation proceedings once their local charges are adjudicated.
