The 287(g) program a program that allows deputies to identify and place detainers on illegal criminal aliens for U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officially began November 16, 2009.
The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department made official application for the 287(g) program on March 3, 2008 and our application was approved by the Department of Homeland Security and ICE on July 10, 2009. The Memorandum of Agreement was signed in October and 18 deputies left in mid October for four weeks of training.
The deputies assigned to the program will be working 24/7 to identify illegal criminal aliens and place detainers on them for ICE. Those inmates will then be turned over to ICE for deportation proceedings once their charges are adjudicated.
