Chief Deputy Walsh
A native of Glendale, NY, William (Bill) Walsh started his service with the United States Navy in 1984. He proudly served 4 years active duty and 4 years in the reserve as an Operations Specialist.
While on active duty, Chief Walsh was twice deployed oversees for extended periods and assisted in the recovery of the Space Shuttle Challenger. Chief Walsh has received numerous awards and
certifications throughout his distinguished military and law enforcement career. In 1984, he received the Top Performer recognition from the U.S. Navy Apprenticeship Training Program, in addition
to being an Honor Graduate from the U.S. Navy Operations Specialist A School.
Chief Walsh’s law enforcement career began in 1988 with the Gwinnett County Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer. His duty assignments included supervision of inmates assigned to the
outside work details. He was later assigned to the K-9 Unit.
In 1990, Chief Walsh transferred to the Gwinnett County Police Department. With great enthusiasm, he worked many areas of the police department throughout his 27 year career. Positions held within
the following areas include: Uniform Patrol, Criminal Investigations, SWAT Operator, Field Training Officer, Uniform Patrol Watch Commander, Hazardous Devices Technician, Hazardous Devices Unit
Commander (Bomb Squad Commander). Chief Walsh ended his tenure in 2017 with Gwinnett County Police Department with the rank of Police Major/Support Operations Assistant Division Commander, East
In 2017, Chief Walsh accepted the position of Major over the Field Operations Division at the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office. While in Field Operations, he effectively managed the following units:
Uniform Warrants, Fugitive, Investigative Services, Extraditions, Sex Offenders, Family Violence and K-9. In June, 2018, he was promoted to his current rank of Chief Deputy. As the Chief Deputy of
Administration, he oversees the follow units: Professional Standards, Technical Services, Training, Uniform Supply, Fleet and Finance.
He is a contracted instructor for Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency. Chief Walsh holds several certifications for specialized areas to include: Hazardous Devices, Hazardous Materials,
Chemical Munitions, Management, Supervisory, P.O.S.T. Firearms Instructor.
Chief Walsh graduated Magna Cum Laude from Mercer University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Science (Criminal Justice), Master of Science in Criminal Justice and Public Safety
Leadership. He is also a graduate of the distinguished FBI National Academy (Class #263).
In his spare time, Chief Walsh enjoys hunting with his German Shorthaired Pointer Liam. He has a daughter and granddaughter.
